Sorption and desorption experiments using stable cesium: considerations for radiocesium retention by fresh plant residues in Fukushima forest soils

چکیده
Abstract We conducted sorption experiments with stable cesium ( 133 Cs) solution in different organic matter samples, aiming to understand the of radiocesium 134 Cs and 137 initial throughfall by fresh plant residues (e.g., needles, wood, bark from Japanese cedar trees) Oi horizon forests Fukushima. Among wattle tannin sorbed relatively large amounts Cs, whereas wood cellulose powder small amounts. In contrast, samples containing clay minerals showed much higher sorption. also desorption experiments, suggested that on were mobile.

Retention of potentially mobile radiocesium in forest surface soils affected by the Fukushima nuclear accident
The fate of (137)Cs derived from the Fukushima nuclear accident fallout and associated radiological hazards are largely dependent on its mobility in the surface soils of forest ecosystems. Thus, we quantified microbial and adsorptive retentions of (137)Cs in forest surface (0-3 cm) soils. The K(2)SO(4) extraction process liberated 2.1%-12.8% of the total (137)Cs from the soils. Two soils with a...
متن کاملForest type effects on the retention of radiocesium in organic layers of forest ecosystems affected by the Fukushima nuclear accident
The Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant disaster caused serious radiocesium (137Cs) contamination of forest ecosystems over a wide area. Forest-floor organic layers play a key role in controlling the overall bioavailability of 137Cs in forest ecosystems; however, there is still an insufficient understanding of how forest types influence the retention capability of 137Cs in organic layers in J...
متن کاملRadiocesium Transfer in Forest Insect Communities after the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant Accident
To understand radiocesium transfer in the forest insect food web, we investigated the activity concentrations of radiocesium in forest insects in the Fukushima and Ibaraki Prefectures approximately 1.5-2.5 years after the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant. We analyzed 34 species of insects sampled from 4 orders and 4 feeding functional groups (herbivore, carnivore, omnivore, and detritivor...
متن کاملCesium adsorption/desorption behavior of clay minerals considering actual contamination conditions in Fukushima.
Cesium adsorption/desorption experiments for various clay minerals, considering actual contamination conditions in Fukushima, were conducted using the (137)Cs radioisotope and an autoradiography using imaging plates (IPs). A 50 μl solution containing 0.185 ~ 1.85 Bq of (137)Cs (10(-11) ~ 10(-9 )molL(-1) of (137)Cs) was dropped onto a substrate where various mineral particles were arranged. It w...
